Understanding the Meaning of Work for the Elderly in South Korea (Biographical Narrative Research)

Abstract
This research aims to understand and interpret how the elderly narrate the meaning of work with biographical narrative interview. Research finding is the following; ¡®To survive¡¯, ¡®Generating positive energy for health¡¯, ¡®Career development and sense of achievement¡¯, ¡®Being independent: Beyond a life of burden and guilt¡¯, ¡®Making them happy¡¯. First of all, the elderly cannot survive if they cannot earn any income by working. Working was the only way to make a living. Secondly, they narrated they can be healthier when they work because the work gives them positive energy. Thirdly, they challenged on their career. They got achievement and self-esteem when they reach to their goals in their working places. Fourthly, they wanted to be independent from their families¡¯ support financially. Finally, they got happiness if they work because people give them recognition, and they thank to their good job performance and income from their jobs. Namely, working was their life itself. In discussion, it is suggested developing more opportunities which the elderly work if they desire to do. Moreover, income security of the elder should be given in priority. Then, the elder can live their successful later life by making their own decision in employment. For further research, taking interviews with not only employed elder people but also unemployed elder people is more recommendable in order to understand more various and comprehensive meaning of work from a variety of perspectives for employment of elder people.
